CrossFit is an intense form of functional training where athletes are often pushing their bodies to the absolute limit. On a daily basis, I consult many CrossFit athletes who have either 1) injured themselves or 2) are interested in preventatively avoiding injury in the first place. These are two completely different types of "CrossFitters" and I'll let you decide which one makes the most sense. In my opinion, one type is "reactive" and the other is "proactive."

As a Chiropractor with extensive training in human biomechanics, I make it a point to educate the people of Greater Moncton on the importance of maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system. If you don't use it properly - you'll most likely lose it at some stage, and maybe quicker than you'd like. CrossFit athletes are extremely dedicated to rigorous training regimes and often make many sacrifices in the name of elevated performance. They are willing to forego that bag of Doritos to pump out 10 extra Clean/Press reps and w...

Everyday at Chiro Clinic Moncton, I consult patients experiencing knee discomfort. Interestingly, many people are unaware that chiropractors are able to treat knee problems - but in actual fact I enjoy managing any musculoskeletal problem, including hips, ankles, shoulders, elbows, and wrists as well.

Top 3 Knee Problems seen at Chiro Clinic Moncton:

1. ITB (Iliotibial Band) Syndrome: Typically a problem for runners, this causes pain on the outside of the knee joint, due to repetitive flicking of a tendon over bone or irritation of underlying fat pads. Inflammation occurs and pain begins.

2. Jumper's Knee: Inflammation or injury to the patellar tendon of rectus femoris, where the knee cap connects to the tibia shin bone.

3. Meniscus Tear: This rubbery disc that cushions the knee joint may be torn by twisting or turning quickly when standing, or due to old age deterioration of the tissue itself.

At Chiro Clinic Moncton, I always provide my patients with advice and preventative measures to avoid any unnecessary degeneration of their body. The spine is composed of 24 moveable segments that include cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae. As people age, it becomes increasingly more difficult to keep these very important areas mobile, which results in progressively worsening stiffness and discomfort. It doesn't need to be this way!

In clinic, patients are typically interested in knowing what can help maintain better mobility for longer as they age, and therefore I'm happy to provide the following tips:

1. Extend The Spine - Office workers go through the entire day slouched at a computer desk and plumbers spend the majority of their workday bent over. Stand up regularly and arch the back. Stretch and look up at the sky!

2. Drink 2 Litres of Water Everyday - The human body thrives on adequate water consumption and most people aren't drin...

At Chiro Clinic Moncton, I consult many patients experiencing discomfort in the lower back and buttocks, which occasionally extends into the leg or foot. It's important for the chiropractor to determine if this is due to sciatica, or something else. Sciatica is described as pain radiating along the path of the sciatic nerve. This large nerve begins as a collection of spinal nerve roots in the lower back, extending into the buttock region, and then branching into the lower leg/foot. Common reasons for "Sciatica" include disc herniations in the low back, bony spurs causing compression of the nerve roots, or narrowing of the spinal canal known as stenosis.

Early assessment is very important to determine if one or more of these problems may be causing that annoying pain in the buttock. Additionally, what would typically be described as "sciatica" is often due to tightening of a deep muscle in the buttock called Piriformis. The sciatic nerve...

It's almost Back To School time and Chiro Clinic Moncton wishes to provide the community with up to date information when selecting a backpack for children. Furthermore, it's incredibly important to know how much weight to put in that backpack to avoid injury. In recent times, more and more children are presenting to chiropractors with chronic back pain due to excessive weight in a backpack, inappropriate carrying of the pack altogether, and poor quality design.

When a backpack is worn correctly, the weight is appropriately distributed across the body - thus lessening the chance of neck, shoulder, and back injuries. With kids often lugging around their entire locker's worth of books, school supplies, and lunch - it's essential to get this right! Too much weight can pull the child's posture backward, causing them to compensate by leaning forward - which place excessive strain on the shoulders and spine. Carrying a backpack on one shoulder (because it apparently looks cool) cau...

At Chiro Clinic Moncton, I consult many patients who are seeking relief for both acute and chronic spinal pain. In modern times, it would seem many people are suffering with back pain, and this may attributed to a variety of factors. Regardless of the cause, it is important to know what to do and more importantly what not to do when experiencing any form of back pain.

As a general rule, bed rest is no longer recommended for acute or chronic back pain. For many decades, it was common practice for healthcare practitioners to suggest resting in bed for a few days after sustaining a spinal injury. Big mistake! Except for very rare serious cases of spinal pain, lack of movement when lying down for prolonged periods will not only delay recovery but may also significantly worsen a patient's symptoms. Restoring mobility to an injured region of your back is crucial, which is why chiropractors, physiotherapists, and massage therapists will regularly suggest going for a w...

At Chiro Clinic Moncton, I occasionally get asked if a referral from a patient's family doctor is required prior to seeing a Chiropractor. The answer is - NO. In Canada, chiropractors are primary care providers and do not require any referral from any other type of doctor. Additionally, insurance companies also do not require a referral to make a claim and the chiropractor may begin treatment at any time. At Chiro Clinic Moncton, we offer Direct Billing for most insurance companies - which means less out-of-pocket costs for the patient!

So, whether you have insurance coverage or not - you do NOT require any referral for chiropractic care. Just simply call the clinic if you would like to make an appointment.
