Is It Sciatica or Something Else?
At Chiro Clinic Moncton, I consult many patients experiencing discomfort in the lower back and buttocks, which occasionally extends into the leg or foot. It's important for the chiropractor to determine if this is due to sciatica, or something else. Sciatica is described as pain radiating along the path of the sciatic nerve. This large nerve begins as a collection of spinal nerve roots in the lower back, extending into the buttock region, and then branching into the lower leg/foot. Common reasons for "Sciatica" include disc herniations in the low back, bony spurs causing compression of the nerve roots, or narrowing of the spinal canal known as stenosis.
Early assessment is very important to determine if one or more of these problems may be causing that annoying pain in the buttock. Additionally, what would typically be described as "sciatica" is often due to tightening of a deep muscle in the buttock called Piriformis. The sciatic nerve travels very near this muscle, and when piriformis becomes aggravated compressing this nerve, it can mimic the symptoms of the more problematic "sciatica" condition. This is known as Piriformis Syndrome, causing "sciatic-type" discomfort into the buttock, and perhaps down the leg. These injuries are very different and require different management approaches. Chiropractic can Help whether it is true sciatica or the less problematic sciatic-type pain. The key to quickly resolving this problem is to get an early diagnosis, appropriate musculoskeletal treatment, and not wait for symptoms to worsen. If significant weakness in the legs or bowel/bladder issues are occurring, contact the hospital immediately.
