Everyday at Chiro Clinic Moncton, I will consult a patient presenting with neck and upper back pain from excessive iPad use in the lying position. Though this may look like a comfy position to play on Facebook or surf the net, it often leads to severe discomfort and a trip to the local Chiropractor. After only a few minutes of being in this awful position, unnecessary strain gets placed on the muscles and discs of the neck, further leading to mechanical overload of the upper thoracic spine. After a few more minutes pass by, fingers start to fall asleep and generally the elbows will begin to tingle. Now, not only are the joints and muscles suffering a beating, but the nerves that supply the arms and hands are becoming irritated. All the while, many people are so captivated by what they're looking at on the tablet, they easily dismiss these warning sign symptoms and end up in pain for days to follow.
My advice is to avoid this position at all costs. We all love tablets, however must find ergonomically strain-free ways to use them. An hour of tablet play in this terrible position will almost certainly leave a lasting effect, and not in a good way.
